Day 1 - Sarnen to Luzern (26 km)
Day 2 - Laufen to Basel (31 km)

Jeremy on the McGill Soccer team which
played in the National University championships in 2003 in Ottawa

I've got Cowtown roots but I've lived mostly in Montreal for the past seven years. Calgary will always be a kind of home for me as I'll always remember what time of day Bow Trail or Sarcee are bottlenecked and where to get the thickest milkshake. My family also lives there. Western Canada is where I honed my high school track and field, basketball and volleyball skills, skills that have gone unused for half a decade.

Soccer champ

Soccer, on the other hand, has stuck around. Coming out of the wiley Chinooks program in Calgary, I played for the McGill Redmen for five years in a role one could only call defensive. The pride of my career, the one and only goal I scored to beat the Concordia Stingers in the Quebec University League semi-final, was off a persuasive but unseen thrust of my left forearm.

I recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and have taken a job that involves sitting long hard hours at a desk and bending over graphs, tables and texts. I'm a junior patent agent and call ROBIC LLB, an IP boutique in the financial heart of the city, my home from nine to five, six or seven. In the off hours, and now that it's summer, I like to enjoy some of the trillion patios in my neighbourhood for a cold brewsky.

My number one fan - my parents, who are also on the Gigathlon team

Since retiring from the varsity ranks, I've tried to stay in shape. I've got myself to the gym. I've gone running. I've joined a bunch of Ukrainian expatriates to play in a soccer league. I've lifted more weight than ever.

But I must admit, it's been a bit like rolling a bolder up a hill with one hand, while sipping a delicious Cheval Blanche or a coppery Trois Pistols from the other. Something has to give.

Enter gigathlon.
